You see me type about it all the time… One-way, inbound links to your site. Gotta have those links as they help Google and others determine your “popularity” factor. Now, not all inbound links are created equal. Since the search engines look at the “popularity” and authority of those sites providing the inbound links as part of the formula, some are inbound links given more weight than others. While other inbound links are completely ignored.
So how do you know what backlinks you do have? You would see this in your Web site stats under Referrers. Referrers are the the sites folks were at that “referred” them your way.
One way I track my inbound links for my sites it to set up Google Alerts so that when Google finds a new link to my sites, I get an alert. Isn’t technology great?!

When you find that you don’t have many quality backlinks, what are you supposed to do? Start writing, creating and adding to your site. Create new niche areas that are about one topic/issue at a time so that those pages have a high relevancy for that one term or topic so they have a better chance of getting found. Remember, getting found doesn’t guarantee backlinks either. That’s where having quality useful information worth linking to comes in.
No, it’s not easy creating great content and that’s exactly why the search engines give such a high regard to those one-way inbound links.
